The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent awards ceremony draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
