EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
